Dentures
Have you lost several teeth or need multiple teeth extracted? You don’t need to deal with having big gaps between teeth or no teeth at all. At Hilldale Dental we offer dentures in Madison, WI, to replace some or all of your teeth that are gone. Let’s explore denture options and the benefits they offer!
When to Consider Getting Dentures?
Have a single missing tooth? Dental implants or bridges are more suitable in this case. But if you have a few or more teeth missing, we may recommend getting dentures. These treatments provide a convenient way to replace several teeth at once. Most types are removable so you can take them out when you want!
Types of Dentures
What different kinds are available? The main types to choose from include the following.
Full Dentures
These are entire sets of replacement teeth that many seniors use. They rest on your gums and can be taken out when you want. You may be able to get a full set of custom dentures right after having teeth extracted. But in some cases, we recommend patients wait 8 to 12 weeks after extractions to start wearing their dentures to give their gums a chance to heal.
Partial Dentures
These are sets of artificial teeth that replace a few or more natural teeth. They usually include a pink base and a metal piece that is attached to the adjacent teeth. You can typically take partial dentures in and out as needed.
Implant-Supported Dentures
For a fixed option, we combine dental implants and dentures. This usually involves placing several implants to hold dentures in place. Implants include a post that’s placed inside your jawbone and an artificial tooth that’s attached to the post. You’ll need to have enough jawbone tissue to hold implant posts in place to be a good candidate for this option.
Overdentures or Snap-in Dentures
Looking for a solution that offers convenience and durability? Overdentures include dental implants and removable dentures that you can take in and out. Snap-in dentures have attachments that make it easy to put them back in place after removing them.
Which Type Should You Get?
That will depend on how many teeth need to be replaced and other factors, such as your budget and personal preferences in terms of convenience and comfort. Our dentist can help you pick the best type for your situation!
What Are the Advantages of Dentures?
This tooth replacement option offers all of the following benefits:
- Clearer ability to speak
- Improved chewing ability
- Support for your facial muscles to prevent sagging
- Enhanced smile
- Customized fit for comfort
- Removable for convenient cleaning and maintenance
How Do You Care for Dentures?
This depends on the type you get. You’ll need to clean and store removable types when you’re not wearing them. For fixed types, you should brush and floss to keep them in good shape.
